Punished for love: the LGBTQ+ community in Poland. Discussion with Anna Strzałkowska and Jacek Jasionek following the screening of WELCOME TO CHECHNYA, dir. David France

Language: Polish

The protagonists of “Welcome to Chechnya” are facing the ultimate punishment for their love. Poland is obligated to accept requests for protection filed by people who are persecuted for their sexual identity in their countries of origin—but a few dozen regions of Poland have recently passed “LGBT-free zone” bills and attacks on LGBT+ people abound. We will discuss Polish LGBT+ issues: how can we act and educate in order to change the cruel status quo?

Guests:

Anna Strzałkowska — psychologist, sociologist, social activist, the first Director of the Tolerado Association working for LGBT rights in Poland.

Jacek Jasionek — lawyer involved in the work for the rights of the LGBT community, Director of the Tolerado Association since 2019.

Moderator:

Małgorzata Muraszko — journalist and editor with Gazeta Wyborcza specializing in culture, particularly fond of music, literature, film, and visual arts.
