How did romantic comedies change our relationships? Meeting following the screening of ROMANTIC COMEDY

First came stories about princes and princesses; then came romantic comedies, and Instagram hashtags promoting passionate love between two young, healthy, heterosexual, flawlessly beautiful people were soon to follow. This imaginary vision of perfect love, insidiously seeping into public consciousness, is harmful in its shallowness. It’s no secret that though people may hold modern views, their dreams are ancient. Often it takes the safe environment of a therapy room to let us state that while romcoms are kitschy, we wouldn’t mind being on the receiving end of that kind of love. What do romantic comedies not tell us about love and romance? What makes us react to them so strongly, whether with enjoyment or criticism? Why do we need to see the protagonists succeed and live happily ever after? Our discussion about ROMANTIC COMEDY will cover all these topics and more.

Przemysław Czapliński (b. 1962) — historian of Polish and European literature of the 20th and 21st century, essayist, translator, literary critic, co-founder of the Faculty of Anthropology of Literature at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, director of the literary criticism specialization, Corresponding Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, director of the Center of Open Human Sciences at AMU. His most recent publications include Polska do wymiany (2009), Resztki nowoczesności (2011), Poruszona mapa (2016), Literatura i jej natury (2017; co-authors: Joanna B. Bednarek, Dawid Gostyński). His research topics are (Polish) literature and the problems of late modernity.

Joanna Sowińska — experienced systems psychotherapist, individual and couples therapist. Initiator of Instytut Pomocy Profesjonalnej in Poznań, an institution that educates and supports young psychologists in improving their practical abilities. Principal of private primary and high school O!MEGA. Sowińska co-hosted the 2019 Film Therapy meetings in Kino Muza with Łukasz Raszewski, discussing modern relationship dynamics with the attendees.
