The Last Male on Earth
The last male northern white rhinoceros, named Sudan, died a year ago in Kenya. In the years before his death he was anything but alone. Day and night he was attended by armed rangers and lovingly fed and stroked by his permanent caretakers. Journalists and tourists from all around the world came to catch a glimpse of him. Scientists still intend to keep his species alive, storing his sperm in liquid nitrogen for at least 3000 years. The threat to his species’ extinctionis fascinating. And what does it tell us about our own species?
